Municipal census complete; city population over 90,000
June 1, 2010
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deer is home to 193 new residents, an increase of .215 per cent over the 2009 Municipal Census numbers. The increase brings Red Deer’s total population to 90,084.
“Although the results of the 2010 census indicate that growth is down significantly over previous years in Red Deer, it remains encouraging that we are still growing in a period of relative inactivity across the country,” said Elaine Vincent, Manager of Legislative & Governance Services with The City of Red Deer.
The strongest growth occurred in the areas of Vanier Woods with 356 residents and Lancaster with 237 new residents. Slight declines in population were experienced in the other areas. The largest decreases were in Central downtown, Eastview and Clearview. This could indicate that residents have relocated to another area in the city and that their previous residence is still vacant.
Municipal census data is useful to both municipal and provincial governments. The census reflects growth in the city and supports city departments in planning for the needs of Red Deerians. Decisions about the locations of schools, parks and fire protection facilities are based to a large extent on population growth that is shown by a census.
Many of the grants received from the Province are awarded to cities on a per capita basis, and a census ensures that maximum grants are received.
The 2010 Census Report is expected to be released by the end of June.
“We greatly appreciate the citizens who so willingly provide the information we require on an annual basis,“ said Vincent. “Without the participation and cooperation of our residents, we would be unable to gain this important information.”
