(Red Deer, Alberta) – Alberta Motor Association (AMA) has partnered with The City of Red Deer and the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre to launch the Driving Angel program in Red Deer. Launching at the Golden Circle on June 7 at 9 a.m., the Driving Angel program will recognize and thank individuals who make a difference in seniors’ lives, and encourage others in the community to provide rides to seniors.
Access to transportation can be a challenge for seniors. Once they no longer drive, it can become difficult to get to appointments, social engagements, and other important events. Seniors become forced to rely on taxis, public transportation, or the kindness of others to get where they need to go.
“Red Deer is full of angels. This program is a great way to recognize the commitment of Red Deerians to our senior population,” said City of Red Deer Mayor Morris Flewwelling. “These volunteers, these angels, are giving the gift of accessibility, which truly affects the quality of life of Red Deer’s seniors. I know their efforts are appreciated.”
“AMA is pleased to support community efforts to recognize the critical importance of addressing the transportation needs of seniors in Red Deer,” said Don Szarko, Director of AMA Advocacy and Community Services.
Two Driving Angels will be acknowledged by the Mayor during the launch, and a pancake breakfast will be served starting at 8:30 a.m.
Seniors who wish to nominate someone who has provided transportation for them can register their Driving Angel by visiting the Golden Circle website at http://www.goldencircle.ca/drivingangel.htm. A driver can be a volunteer, such as a neighbour, friend, or family member, who takes seniors to medical appointments, essential services, or social or recreational activities. Once the name has been registered, the nominator will receive a Driving Angel pin and certificate to personally present to their Angel.
