Council meeting to discuss possible Idle Free bylaw

March 4, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – City Council will consider a report from the Environmental Advisory Committee, related to an anti–idling bylaw at Monday night’s council meeting.

Copies of the council agenda are available on The City’s website or at Legislative and Administrative Services on the second floor of City Hall.

The City showed its desire to lead by example when implementing new environmental initiatives when, in January 2009, it approved a Corporate Idle Free Policy that prohibits unnecessary idling of City vehicles.

In 2009, The City saved approximately 76,628 litres of fuel and $72,338 by reducing unnecessary idling of its own fleet vehicles, which represents a reduction of approximately 218,156 kg of CO2. This not only demonstrates The City’s commitment to voluntarily reducing its contribution to air pollution, but also illustrates the financial benefits of reducing unnecessary vehicle idling.
