(Red Deer, Alberta) - A federal-provincial-municipal partnership will support sanitary sewer and storm water improvements in Red Deer, resulting in more efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater collection.
The announcement was made by Earl Dreeshen, Member of Parliament for Red Deer, on behalf of John Baird, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities; Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation; and Morris Flewwelling, Mayor of Red Deer.
“This government is providing important infrastructure investments to stimulate the economy and create jobs, while improving the health, safety and quality of life of Canadians,” said MP Dreeshen. “These projects will facilitate growth in Red Deer, one of Alberta’s fastest-growing cities.”
“Continuing to invest in infrastructure is one of the Alberta government’s priorities, and this funding will boost Alberta’s economy, create jobs and benefit communities,” said Ouellette. “Shared investment by Alberta and the federal government in projects like the improvements to Red Deer’s wastewater system is making a difference across the province.”
“This is an exciting investment in our community as it helps create opportunity for continued growth and development in Red Deer. It demonstrates a commitment to ensuring a strong, healthy and sustainable Red Deer well into the future,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling.
This project involves the construction of sanitary trunks on the east and west sides of the Red Deer River, storm water collection and treatment improvements, and significant grading work to facilitate the construction of the utilities.
Under the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada Fund, the Government of Canada is setting aside up to one-third of total eligible costs, to a maximum federal contribution of just over $12 million. The Government of Alberta and the City of Red Deer are also each providing more than $12 million. The total cost of this initiative is estimated at more than $36 million.
Federal funding is subject to the project meeting all federal eligibility requirements of the Building Canada Fund and the signing of a contribution agreement for the project.
Beyond this funding announcement, the Government of Canada is taking important steps to support economic growth. Canada’s Economic Action Plan, announced in Budget 2009, is a balanced stimulus plan that includes significant investments in infrastructure, tax relief and transfers.
This plan provides $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years, as well as the acceleration of the $33-billion Building Canada Plan, which addresses needs in communities across Canada, as well as contributing to long-term economic growth through investments in public infrastructure, such as roads, water treatment, green energy and transit.
Continuing to invest in public infrastructure is a key part of the Government of Alberta’s plan for a strong economic recovery. The Way Forward will bring Alberta back into a surplus position in three years by trimming government spending; using cash reserves to protect key programs; and ensuring that Alberta’s industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.
