(Red Deer, Alberta) – With Earth Hour approaching, Mayor Morris Flewwelling officially proclaimed Saturday March 27, 2010 from 8:30 until 9:30 p.m. Earth Hour. The proclamation was made this afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Mayor’s office. Accompanying the Mayor for the proclamation was Environmental Services Coordinator Pam Vust and Electric, Light & Power Manager, Ligong Gan.
Earth Hour, organized by the World Wildlife Fund, started in 2007 in Sydney where 2.2 million electricity consumers switched off their lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change. In 2008 the message grew into a global movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Participating in Earth Hour demonstrates a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and proves that individual efforts, when taken together, add up to make a positive difference for the environment.
Last year, Red Deer citizens reduced electricity consumption by 2.5 per cent during Earth Hour. This year, Red Deer is proud to be an Earth Hour “Flagship City,” residents and businesses are encouraged to join The City in shutting off their unnecessary lights to reduce power consumption. The City will once again be shutting off all non-essential facility lighting, including City Hall and the Collicutt Centre.
“Red Deer citizens helped save 8,800 kWh of electricity last year, this was enough energy to run The City’s entire traffic light system continuously for five days,” said Mayor, Morris Flewwelling. “The community has shown tremendous support during Earth Hour and I expect to see greater results in energy reduction during this year’s Earth Hour campaign.”
