(Red Deer, Alberta) – On April 1, LED (light emitting diode) street lights and other high efficiency street lights are making their way onto Red Deer’s residential streets. The Electric Light & Power department is currently installing six different sets of energy efficient street lights along Addington Drive, from Avery Street to Austin Drive.
The purpose of the pilot is to determine if these energy efficient lights are more efficient and cost effective than the HPS (high pressure sodium) lights The City currently uses. The LED lighting pilot project is part of The City’s ongoing effort to implement energy alternatives throughout the community.
“We are really pleased to be working with the different manufactures on this project,” said Garfield Lee, Senior Electrical Distribution Engineer for The City of Red Deer.”The pilot project along Addington will help us explore lighting alternatives for our community and give Red Deerians the chance to provide feedback about what works in their community."
The pilot will also look at the following factors:
- the light level
- how light is distributed on the roadway
- the colour of the light produced
- human perception of how the roadway is lit
- how much electricity the different light fixtures use
We encourage resident to view the lights and provide us with feedback by taking our survey at http://www.reddeer.ca.
