Bike to work this Thursday

May 18, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deerians may want to take a detour to the Recreation Centre during their morning commute this Thursday, when the community will enjoy food, fun, and informative booths from various groups as part of the 20th Annual Bike to Work Breakfast.

Citizens should lace up their sneakers and walk, cycle, skateboard, in-line skate, or jog to the Recreation Centre to take part in the breakfast, which runs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on May 20. In addition to enjoying the free breakfast, participants will have an opportunity to enter some great prize draws and learn more about safe biking practices.

“Red Deer citizens have supported the Bike to Work Breakfast for the past 20 years, and it’s easy to understand why,” said Melanie McIntyre-Scott, Better Biking Red Deer Program Leader. “The breakfast promotes the active, environmentally friendly lifestyle we value in our community, and by participating, Red Deerians champion these values.”

While the Bike to Work Breakfast promotes active, environmentally friendly living, it also kicks off Red Deer’s annual Summer Active Challenge against Grande Prairie. The challenge calls for citizens to get active, in any way, for at least 30 minutes a day.

“In the 10 years we’ve been doing the Summer Active Challenge, we’ve only beat Grande Prairie once,” said McIntyre-Scott. “This year is our opportunity to show Grande Prairie just what Red Deerians are made of.”

Participants who attend the breakfast can record their morning physical activity as part of the challenge to see which city logs more hours of activity at www.provincialfitnessunit.ca on May 20.

“Red Deer offers so many organized sports, fitness classes, and outdoor activities,” said McIntyre-Scott, “but even something as simple as walking to the mail-box or biking to work can make a difference.”

The Bike to Work Breakfast is hosted by The City of Red Deer and Better Biking Red Deer. Sponsors for the event include Big 105, Piper Creek Optimists, Sobeys, Red Deer Advocate and the Downtown Business Association.
