City Council sets 2010 tax rate

May 3, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – City Council has set the new tax rates for 2010. Residential property owners will see an increase of approximately 2.6 per cent, multi-family increase of about 6.9 per cent, and non- residential property owners about 2.6 per cent.

The increases are the combined municipal, education, and Piper Creek Foundation requisition requirements. Under the Alberta Housing Act and by law, The City is required to collect monies from taxpayers on behalf of the Piper Creek Foundation so that they are able to provide affordable housing options for seniors.

“While many residential property assessments went down this year, that doesn’t mean residents’ property taxes will go down too,” said Joanne Parkin, Assessment & Taxation Manager. “A decrease in your assessment does not equal a decrease in your property taxes.”

An average residential property assessed at $300,000 will pay about $60 more in taxes this year, bringing the total tax bill from $2,286 to $2,346.

In January, Council approved an operating budget of $89.7 million.

“It’s about collecting enough to continue providing services for Red Deer residents,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “Our municipal taxes cover everything from maintaining our roads to cleaning parks and trails and providing police and emergency services.”

Property tax notices will go out at the end of May, with tax payments due on or before Wednesday, June 30.
