Heritage projects to be celebrated at Heritage Recognition Awards

May 31, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Central Albertans are invited to celebrate heritage preservation on June 4, when the Red Deer Heritage Preservation Committee announces the winners of the 2010 Red Deer Heritage Recognition Awards.

The ceremony, to be held at 11:30 a.m. at Red Deer County Council Chambers, 38106, Range Road 275, will recognize 10 nominees as leaders in heritage preservation while raising awareness in the community of the continuing need to save historical and environmental heritage. Four new award recipients will be announced.

“The heritage initiatives that will be showcased at this year’s awards ceremony represent a growing understanding of the need for both preservation of existing heritage structures and respect for community memory,” said Heritage Preservation Committee chair Sheila Bannerman. “Red Deer should be proud of the efforts represented in this year’s nominations and awards.”

Central Albertans are encouraged to attend the ceremony, which includes refreshments, and to consider nominating heritage initiatives for the awards in upcoming years, added Bannerman. “The Heritage Recognition Awards program supports heritage preservation projects within the community – projects that would not be possible without people and organizations who are passionate about our heritage. Through these awards, we recognize their efforts and celebrate their accomplishments.”

This is the Committee’s ninth annual awards presentation. Past recipients include the Sunnybrook Farm Museum; Red Deer Main Street Project; Harlan Hulleman; Alberta Health Services for Michener Bend; Markerville Icelandic Library; Central Alberta Historica School Fairs; the old C.P.R. Train Bridge; the Old Court House; Holy Trinity Anglican Church Pine Lake; the Manning and Ellis/MacKenzie residences; the Parson’s House; the Cronquist House; North Cottage School; the Hamlet of Markerville; Raven Union Church; the Danish Canadian National Museum and Gardens; and the Double Tree Village Museum near Spruce View.
