Driving in winter conditions and fresh snowfall
November 16, 2010
(Red Deer, Alberta) – With the recent snowfalls in and around Red Deer, The City’s snow and ice control crews are working around the clock trying to control the icy conditions of the streets. Residents are reminded to drive according to road and weather conditions. It is important to always keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and take care when driving around snow and ice control equipment.
“Throughout the winter months, City crews maintain over 500 kilometres of roads” said Jim Chase, Roads Superintendent. “We encourage motorists to keep safety in mind as they travel roads where there is snow and ice maintenance equipment.”
Supervisors check weather reports and move equipment, materials, and personnel in order to implement snow and ice control activities as per the City’s snow & ice control policy. During the snow and ice season, City crews work to keep roadways drivable and traffic moving by plowing and sanding as well as using a de-icing solution.
The liquid de-icing solution will be used as part of The City’s standard snow and ice control practices. By applying a liquid de-icer to streets prior to, or at the beginning of a storm, this will help prevent snow and ice from bonding to the road surface. This process will help reduce plow time, sand use and spring clean up.
