The City invites expressions of interest for a new Ghost at Sorensen Station

November 30, 2010

The City of Red Deer is inviting expressions of interest for the Sorensen Station Public Art Project. The proposed public artwork is to be a bronzed Ghost, a life-sized, realistic bronze statue depicting an important element of Red Deer’s history.

As part of the process of acquiring a new public artwork, interested artists are asked to submit a letter and supporting documents indicating their interest and qualifications that illustrates their ability and understanding of the nature of the project. A detailed list of what the expression of interest should include can be found at www.reddeer.ca/culture. The deadline for submissions is Friday, December 17, 2010.

Submissions for this project will be juried through a two step process. Short-listed artists or arts groups will be asked to complete renderings and/or maquettes for an artist fee of $2,000. Renderings and/or maquettes will be due by Friday, February 11, 2011. Finalists will present their proposals to the jury on Monday, February 14, 2011.

The Ghosts of Red Deer program was initiated by the Red Deer Downtown Business Association in 1994. In 2007, responsibility for this program was transferred to the City of Red Deer. The collection combines art and heritage to celebrate the people, animals, events, and daily life of Red Deer’s past, telling these stories in an interactive and thought-provoking way, and bringing it to life for current residents and visitors. There are currently nine Ghosts in the collection, with the last Ghost being installed in 2004.
