55A Street and Northern portion of 54 Avenue closed to support development in Railyards

September 15, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – As part of the “Elements at River’s Edge” development occurring at 5518 Gaetz Avenue, 55A Street and the northern portion of 54th Avenue will be permanently closed on Thursday, September 16, 2010.

These portions of roadway are being sold to Rivercity Developments to support the development project which is consistent with the vision outlined in the Greater Downtown Action Plan (GDAP) for redevelopment of the area. The GDAP, which is a council approved document, sets the framework for redevelopment within downtown including areas such as the Railyards.

“This development is an important step towards realizing the vision set forward in the Greater Downtown Action Plan,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “This will create an inviting downtown environment using creative solutions to create both residential and commercial spaces.”

The road closure is in accordance with the Road Closure Bylaw approved by Council in July 2010.

Until the 55 Street Extension Project is completed in 2011 residents must use 52 Street to access the Railyards area from Gaetz Avenue. Access to the Railyards area via the Taylor Drive / 54 Avenue intersection will remain in full operation.
