Priority 3 snow removal
January 7, 2011
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Sunday, January 9, City crews will begin removing snow from Priority 3 (collectors) roadways. With the recent snowfall Priority 3 clearing begins when 10 cm of packed snow accumulates. These roadways include collector roads on bus routes and in the downtown core, as well as residential streets adjacent to schools.
Work crews are starting in the Kentwood and Johnstone areas and working south, while another crew will start in the Vanier Woods subdivision and work north. Depending on the weather this operation is expected to take approximately eight days. However if Red Deer receives a heavy snow fall, Priority 3 removal will be postponed to focus on Priority 1 roadways.
“We really stress to motorist that if they encounter a snow blowing operation that they do not pass the snow blower on the left,” said Greg Sikora, Public Works Manager. “By passing the equipment it creates the potential for a collision. If motorists just wait a few minutes for a truck to load traffic can then proceed to the right of the snow blower safely.”
Paired with the snow pack depth, the recent irregular warm weather has created ruts and windrows of slush that when frozen, creates ice hazards that can make lane changes and parallel parking difficult for motorists.
No Parking signs will be placed on the roads a minimum of 12 hours before they are plowed. However residents are reminded that crews may experience challenges resulting from equipment failure or weather, in which “no parking” signs may remain on some streets for up to three days before the street is cleared. If vehicles are left parked on signed streets they will be ticketed and towed with the owner of the vehicle responsible for the cost.
