The City begins clearing snow from residential roads
January 25, 2011
The City will begin snow plowing on residential roads as early as Saturday, January 29, upon completion of the Priority 3 (collector roadway) removals. City crews expect that it will take approximately 25 days to plow and windrow the 225 plus kilometers of residential roads. This snow plowing will place the City in a better position to handle additional snowfall during the remaining winter months and to prepare for the spring melt in March.
“We have had a lot of snow over the last month and crews have been working around the clock clearing our Priority 1, 2 and 3 roadways,” said Greg Sikora, Public Works Manager. “After assessing the condition of our residential streets we know it’s time to get our crews out there to keep these roads passable and in good driving condition.”
Snow plowing will result in snow windrows being placed on the even side of the road. City crews will take special care not to obstruct driveways as a result of plowing; however, some on street parking will be reduced because of the snow windrows. Residents are reminded not to park beside the windrows, because parked vehicles obstruct the travel lanes creating hazards for other motorists.
“We do realize that some residential roads may not require clearing; however, we are concerned that additional snow and warm conditions may make these roads impassable in the spring,” said Sikora.
The City will post signs indicating when parking is restricted on residential roads. Residents are advised to pay attention to the times on the signs and make sure their vehicles are not on the street during the restricted parking times, or they will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. The City also asks that drivers slow down, be patient and use extreme caution when entering a snow plowing operation area.
Further information outlining residential snow clearing schedules will follow under separate cover as it becomes available. Plowing in residential neighborhoods will start in Kentwood and Vanier Woods and the sequence after that will be posted daily. Some sequences may vary from the bus route sequence as crews will review it daily.
A snow and ice control map showing the five priority levels and their corresponding streets is available from the Public Works department page on The City of Red Deer’s website at
www.reddeer.ca
. The Public Works page also offers information on the Snow and Ice Control Policy, snow removal, sidewalk clearing and snow safety.
To report any unsafe roadways, please phone Public Works at 403-342-8238.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
