The City focuses back on Priority 1 and 2 roadways

January 14, 2011

With the recent snow fall and additional snow in Red Deer’s forecast, snow removal on collector roadways (bus routes) has been suspended temporarily. City crews are now concentrating on Priority 1 and Priority 2 roadways, with plowing and sanding operations continuing around the clock.

“We have had a lot of snowfall over the last week and when it starts to snow like this it requires we monitor the conditions of our Priority 1 and Priority 2 roadways and return our crews back to these areas as required,” said Greg Sikora, Public Works Manager. “We saw a need to return back to those routes and we need to ensure those priority roads stay passable.”

Beginning Sunday night crews are starting snow removal on bridges, areas around the hospital, downtown core and major intersections. However, this may take three or four evenings to complete, before returning back to Priority 3 roadways.

“We ask that motorists are patient and keep a safe distance from snow fighting equipment,” said Jim Chase, Roads Superintendent. “We have hired an additional seven graders to assist us is plowing operations, and our crews are out in full force and working around the clock.”

A snow and ice control map showing the five priority levels and their corresponding streets is available from the Public Works department page on The City of Red Deer’s website at http://www.reddeer.ca. The Public Works page also offers information on the Snow and Ice Control Policy, snow removal, sidewalk clearing and snow safety.

Public Works continues to address and monitor accessibility concerns due to drifting snow in residential areas and local roadways.

To report any unsafe roadways, please phone Public Works at 403-342-8238.
