Naming competition reaches 50 submissions
September 12, 2011
On the search for a permanent name, the downtown district currently known as the Railyards has more than a few options with Red Deerians submitting more than 50 unique names to the “Name this district” contest.
“We are thrilled with the creative submissions we have received from the community so far,” said Haley Mountstephen, Senior Planner. “From Bridgeview to Xanadu, we have received names that reflect the historic features in the district and others that capture our future vision for the district as a vibrant mixed-use area with an emphasis on high-density urban living.”
Since June 2, 2011, 54 unique names have been submitted, including the current name Railyards.
Residents can participate by emailing their name idea for the district to
planning@reddeer.ca
, along with their contact information. The City will be collecting name ideas until the late fall, and then three name submissions will be selected by City Council for the public to vote on in early 2012.
“We hope to reach 100 unique name submissions,” said Jordan Furness, Planner. ”The winning submission will earn the contributor $250 to spend at businesses within the district.”
The Railyards district is bounded to the north by the Red Deer River, Ross Street/Taylor Drive to the south, and 51 Avenue/Gaetz Avenue to the east. As one of the focal points of the Greater Downtown Action Plan (GDAP), it was recommended in the GDAP that the area should seek a new name.
