What to do during a power outage

September 2, 2011

The City is experiencing an unusual number of power outages this summer due largely to uncontrollable situations; like birds, lightning and vehicles hitting poles. While Electric Light & Power is always trying to minimize power problems that can change the system, they still do happen and it is important residents are prepared for when the power does go out.

  • Check to see if your home or business is the only one affected. Perhaps the power outage is isolated to a problem in your house. If that is the case, call your electrician; otherwise please contact Electric Light & Power.
  • Turn off and unplug all appliances, air conditioner, electronic equipment and tools. This will prevent injury, damage to equipment and fire. Furthermore, power can be restored more easily when the electrical grids or systems are not overloaded.
  • When using candles, use proper candle holders and place them away from flammable material and out of reach of children. Never leave lit candles unattended.
  • Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping equipment or home generators indoors. They become serious hazards when used indoors.

The risk of traffic accidents can also greatly increase during outages. Without traffic signals and street lights it is important to use extreme caution when traveling the roadways. The following tips and guidelines are designed to help both drivers and pedestrians reduce the risk of traffic accidents during a power outage.

  • Treat traffic lights as a four-way stop, with the person on the right having the right-of-way.
  • Proceed with caution only when traffic permits.
  • Enter intersections or highways only when it is safe to do so, using turn signals to let other drivers and pedestrians know your intentions.
  • Obey law enforcement officers who are directing traffic.
  • Use common courtesy towards other drivers and pedestrians.

City of Red Deer crews are working immediately to repair an outage, and will inform the public of any delayed restoration problems.
