(Red Deer, Alberta) - Rolling power outages are scheduled as a result of the high temperatures hitting our province today. The Alberta Electric System Operator instructed The City to shed power loads until further notice.
The City will start with parts of Deer Park, Rosedale, Anders and Inglewood and continue to roll throughout The City. The rolling outages will last for approximately 15 minutes each in an effort to comply with the load standards set by The Province of Alberta.
“There is an increased demand resulting from warm temperatures, and with those temperatures expected to continue, we are requesting residents of Red Deer to be frugal with their energy use,” said Jim Jorgensen, Electric Light and Power Manager.
While the power supply remains secure, people should attempt to limit their power use between the peak periods of 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. That power primetime is when the grid sees the most demand.
City traffic signals will be affected by the rolling outages. Without traffic signals and street lights it is important to use extreme caution when traveling the roadways. The following tips and guidelines are designed to help both drivers and pedestrians reduce the risk of traffic accidents during a power outage.
- Treat traffic lights as a four-way stop, with the person on the right having the right-of-way.
- Proceed with caution only when traffic permits.
- Enter intersections or highways only when it is safe to do so, using turn signals to let other drivers and pedestrians know your intentions.
- Obey law enforcement officers who are directing traffic.
- Use common courtesy towards other drivers and pedestrians.
- There are numerous ways to keep power consumption down when the power grid is stressed from increased demand.
- Adjust your load: Try to use major appliances such as washers, dryers and dish washers during off-peak hours (after 7p.m. on weeknights or on weekends) when demand is lower.
