Deputy Chief Wyatt was instrumental in the formation of the Safe Communities Coalition in Central Alberta.
Willis Honorable Distinction Award for Innovation, Dedication and Meritorious Service in Municipal Administration

Project/Initiative: Red Deer Computerized Traffic Management Program
In 1987, Red Deer became the first city in North America to implement the Split, Cycle and Offset Optimization Technique Real (SCOOT) Time Signal Synchronization Computer System. The Royal Bank of Canada and the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators presented The City of Red Deer with the prestigious Willis - Honourable Distinction Award for The City's Traffic Management Program. SCOOT operates by constantly measuring the pattern of vehicle demands and continuously changing the signal timings so they match the developing traffic situation. Detectors supply second-by-second traffic volume information to the SCOOT System. Detectors are located in advance of the signalized intersections. CCTV cameras are also used to monitor traffic flow at the City's busiest intersections.
Past President Award for Professional Excellence in Transportation Engineering

Project/Initiative: Red Deer's Parking Management Program
The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) awarded The City of Red Deer Engineering Department with the 2002 Past President Award for Professional Excellence in Transportation Engineering. ITE is an international professional society with members in 80 countries and a worldwide network of almost 15,000 transportation engineers, planners, and others responsible for safe and efficient movement of people and goods on streets, highways, and transit systems. ITE has been providing transportation professionals with programs and resources for increased knowledge and advancement. ITE members are employees of government agencies, regional planning offices, consulting firms, educational institutions, product manufacturers, university students and other transportation related disciplines. The Past Presidents' Award is intended to encourage the conduct and reporting of independent and original research and to provide a means for recognizing outstanding accomplishments in the field of transportation engineering.
Award of Merit, Transportation Infrastructure

Project/Initiative: 67 Street and 30 Avenue Arterial Corridor
The City of Red Deer was awarded the 2002 Award of Merit for Transportation Infrastructure by the Consulting Engineers of Alberta for their 67 Street and 30 Avenue Arterial Corridor project. Transportation projects from across the province competed for this position. A panel of judges assessed the projects and selected winners based on technical innovation, taking into account economic, social and environmental factors.
FCM-CH2M Hill Sustainable Community Award

Project/Initiative: Waste Management Facility
In 2002, The City of Red Deer was recognized for its leadership in the development of its new Waste Management Facility. This is an integrated facility that not only includes a landfill, but also a composting pad, recycling/salvage area, a permanent household hazardous waste depot and an interpretive centre. The Waste Management section received this award for excellence in municipal service delivery, leadership in championing sustainable community development, as well as promoting best practices in addressing environmental issues in municipal operations. The City exceeded the minimum requirements for this landfill design, demonstrating its respect for the public input received and its commitment to the protection of the natural environment.

In 2001, Mr. Gary Buchanan, on behalf of the Alberta Association of the Canadian Institute of Planners, presented The City of Red Deer with the Honour Award for planning Excellence and Award of Excellence for their preparation of the Greater Downtown Action Plan.
Alberta Community Development Innovation Award
To: Recreation, Parks & Culture (1995)

Project/Initiative: Collaboration of agencies and cultural groups on resources sharing and on undertaking joint initiatives and projects
The Recreation, Parks and Culture Department received the 1995 Alberta Community Development Innovation Award from the Honorable Mr. Gary Mar, Minister of Community Development, during the Showcase Conference in Edmonton. This award is in recognition of the department's initiative in getting 14 cultural groups and agencies to formally sign a collaborative charter to share resources and undertake joint initiatives and projects. Lesia Davies, the former Culture Development Superintendent, was instrumental in negotiating this charter and in earning this Innovation Award.
