Alex Metcalfe Award For Economic Development Excellence 

To: Land and Economic Development (2003)

Awarding Organization: Economic Developers Association of Alberta

Project/Initiative: Convergys Corporation Call Centre

 

The Economic Developers Association of Alberta presented this award to the organization with the most successful development project. Eligible projects had to generate or sustain at least the tax base in the community. The City of Red Deer was honoured for its hard work in bringing the Convergys Corporation Call Centre to Red Deer. To make this a viable option for the company, Land & Economic Development gathered the information that Convergys needed and ensured factors like space and labourers in this area would support an office of this size. The Red Deer office currently employs more than 700 people.

Project/Initiative: Nossack Fine Meats

 

The Economic Developers Association of Alberta presented this award to the organization with the most successful development project. Eligible projects had to generate or sustain at least the tax base in the community. The City of Red Deer was honoured for its facilitation work with Nossack Fine Meats in their decision to build a multi-million dollar, federally inspected meat-processing plant in Red Deer. Relocation was an option for Nossack, but ongoing relations with the department turned up the ideal plot of land with the proper zoning, visual exposure and good transportation routes.

The Economic Developers Association of Alberta selected Howard Thompson as the most deserving candidate for an award that recognizes contribution to the growth of their community and involvement in furthering the profession of economic development in Alberta. This award is sponsored by AVAC Ltd., a non-profit private company dedicated to nurturing and developing value-added agriculture in Alberta.

Project/Initiative: Central Alberta's Approach To Economic Development - A Cooperative Approach Unique In Alberta

 

Alan Scott, former manager of The City of Red Deer's Land and Economic Development department, gave a presentation at The International Network of Economic Developers Conference held in Brussels, Belgium in November of 1998. The City of Red Deer was one of 12 Canadian municipalities invited to speak at this international economic development conference. Mr. Scott, on behalf of The City, presented Central Alberta's approach to economic development – a co-operative approach that is unique in Alberta.


EDAC President

In September of 1992, Alan Scott was named president of the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC). EDAC is Canada's national organization of economic developers and is dedicated to enhancing the professional competence of economic development officers and ensuring placement of qualified people in the economic development field. As president of EDAC, Alan was responsible for advancing economic development as a distinct, recognized and self-governing profession and helping contribute to Canada's economic well-being.
