Future Directions: Red Deer at 300,000 Future Directions: Red Deer at 300,000 began an open dialogue in 2006 with citizens, neighbours, and partners in Central Alberta regarding future directions and manner of Red Deer's growth. Future Directions: Red Deer at 300,000 began with a concept showing one option for how Red Deer could accommodate 300,000 people.
The City engaged the citizens of Red Deer in a public consultation process to provide direction to The City on growth management for Red Deer. Over 1,300 responses were received, including over 1,700 comments. This feedback indicated that more in-depth research and planning was needed to support future growth.
The Growth Strategy City Council asked a consultant, in conjunction with City staff, to develop a land-use concept of Red Deer at a population of 300,000. Following further planning research and a public consultation period in September and October of 2006, the original concept was revised into the current Growth Strategy, which forms the basis for more detailed planning.
City Council approved A Growth Strategy on December 18, 2006.
The Intermunicipal Development Plan With the Growth Strategy in place, The City moved forward with a new collaborative planning model. On March 23, 2007, The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County announced the first step in a multi-step process geared toward developing a strong intermunicipal relationship.
The City and the County worked closely together on the Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP), a long-term planning document that provides a framework for cooperative land-use planning between The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County.
The Intermunicipal Development Plan was adopted by Red Deer City Council and Red Deer County Council on July 5, 2007.
