October 15, 2005 - City hosts industrial annexation public meeting

October 15, 2005

(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer is hosting a public meeting on October 18, 2005 to give affected landowners, citizens and other stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about The City's industrial annexation proposal.

Attendees will have the opportunity to view a presentation by City and Parkland Community Planning staff, ask questions about the proposed annexation, and provide input on the proposal.

"The purpose of this public meeting is to discuss our plans for industrial annexation with the public, answer any questions that arise, and gather input so that we can work toward finalizing our annexation application,” said Nancy Hackett, City Planner, Parkland Community Planning Services.

The City needs to annex industrial land to meet growth demands and also to comply with the Intermunicipal Development Plan’s guideline of maintaining a 20-30 year supply of industrial land within The City’s boundaries.

The City is proposing to annex eight quarter sections of land immediately west of Queen Elizabeth II Highway (Highway 2) and immediately south of Highway 11A. This area can be fully serviced by The City to provide a large inventory of serviced land for industrial development. As annexation does not involve a change in land ownership, only a change in boundary, any lands annexed by The City remain under the ownership of private land owners.

City Council approved the Notice of Intent to Annex at its September 26 Council Meeting. Over the fall, The City will be discussing the industrial annexation proposal with Red Deer County and affected stakeholders. The City hopes to wrap up public consultation in November, with the final annexation application being filed with the Municipal Government Board (MGB) before Christmas. Ultimately, the MGB is responsible for approving the proposed annexation. Depending on whether a hearing is required, their final decision is anticipated by mid-2006.

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on 67 Street.  The presentation outlining the annexation application will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Affected residents, landowners and agencies will be kept informed about the annexation process through direct mail outs and open houses. Information is also available on The City of Red Deer Web site at www.reddeer.ca under ‘Keeping you Informed’.
