Background

The City and the County are pioneering a new type of planning that involves identifying long-range land uses, servicing, and transportation corridors for the Red Deer area many years into the future. The Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP), adopted in July 2007, began the collaborative process toward a long-term vision for Central Alberta, and the Joint Planning Initiative is building on this foundation.

Agreements made in the IDP dictate that a major area structure plan must be prepared for the entire IDP Area. The Joint Planning Initiative will result in a document that will be incorporated into an appropriate plan or series of plans as required by the IDP.

The JPI will continue to refine and implement the IDP’s establishment of a broad growth framework and set of policies. It will provide land-use planning direction between The City and the County for the three sub-areas:

  1. The City Growth Area (future annexation area)
  2. The Collaborative Area
  3. The County Lands beyond the IDP boundary

Work on the Joint Planning Initiative will continue to promote the collaborative planning process that The City and the County have prioritized.
