Area Redevelopment Plan
The 2008 Greater Downtown Action Plan (GDAP) recommended development of an Area Development Plan (ARP) for the Railyards district that would provide more details on how to achieve the vision/objectives developed for the district.
Vision
Railyards is a vibrant mixed-use area with an emphasis on high-density urban living. Its attractive streets and array of services ranging from restaurants and grocery stores to a daycare invite everyone from young professionals to families who made Railyards their home.
Objectives
• Recognize the rail heritage of the area
• Rezone the district to allow and encourage residential mixed-use development
• Create new pedestrian and bike connections to the Waskasoo Park river trails
• Enhance property values along the river by burying overhead power lines
• Establish improved vehicle, pedestrian and cycle connections between Riverlands, Historic Downtown and Railyards
Naming Competition
The GDAP recommends a public naming process to determine the preferred name for this district.
Here’s the Process:
1.
Suggestions
will be accepted from Thursday, June 2, 2011, until the due date for comments on the draft plan for the district. (Fall 2011)
2. The Steering Committee for the project will narrow the list of names to 10 for review by City Council
3. City Council will narrow the list of names to 3
4. An online vote will be held to choose a winning name for the district to be announced at Council (Winter 2012)
5. The winning submission will receive $250 to spend at businesses within the district. If
multiple entries are received for the winning name then a draw will be held to
determine the winner. If Railyards is chosen as the ultimate name then anyone who
submitted a name will be entered into the draw
How to enter:
Submit your entry by email to
planning@reddeer.ca
or by mail to Naming Competition, Planning department, Box 5008, City of Red Deer, AB, T4N 3T4.
Check out the naming submissions so far.
