Water Management

Effective water management plays an essential role in both the health and continued growth of communities in Alberta. The City of Red Deer is taking a proactive approach in water management to ensure that the city's future is a prosperous one.

Red Deer City Council has been presented with two water management plans for their review and consideration.

South Saskatchewan River Basin Water Management Plan - Draft
The South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) Water Management Plan was developed in response to the demands and the challenges the province may face as a result of population growth and agricultural and industrial developments. The Plan is a reflection of the balance that the Province is trying to achieve between protecting the aquatic environment of the Basin’s main rivers and the water diversion and consumption that contributes to economic prosperity in Southern Alberta.

Special Areas Water Supply Project
Low precipitation and lack of secure water supply have had significant negative impacts on several areas of east central Alberta. The Special Areas Board (SAB) has initiated The Special Areas Water Supply Project (SAWSP) as a way to relieve the water problems in these areas. SAWSP is a proposal that has been put forth by the Board that will see water from the Red Deer River diverted to the Sounding and Berry Creek systems in east central Alberta.
