The goal

Parking in the downtown core will be easier thanks to 400 parking spaces in a brand new parkade set to begin construction in the summer of 2009 and finish in the summer of the 2010.

In addition to providing more parking, the parkade will allow for expanded Transit office space and kiosk retail opportunities in the northwest corner.

As an added bonus this project is also intended to eventually pay for itself, The City plans to charge market rates for stalls in order to recover the capital costs.

The 21.3 million cost will be spread out from 2008 to 2010, with 7 million coming out of the 2009 capital budget.

The design
The new parkade will feature the latest in high tech parking and walk up access, safety features, energy efficiency and modern contemporary design.

The leading edge design, by John Murray Architectural Associates, features 2 green roofs, 2 elevators and will incorporate the present Transit Terminal. All of the parking and future plus fifteen links are being built above the present Transit terminal along 49 Avenue between 48 and 49 Streets.

The plan
The City was thinking ahead when the foundation for the parkade was pre-engineered in 2002. Support pilings for a 3 level parking structure where added when the Transit Terminal was built. The rest of the project construction will be pre cast because it is compatible with the existing foundation and because it’s the fastest and most cost effective construction method.

D.A Watt Consulting has conducted a traffic impact assessment to ensure efficient traffic flow in and out of the parkade.

The move
Transit service in and out of the downtown core will be temporarily relocated for the duration of construction. The temporary terminal is located on 48 Street between 47 Avenue and 47A Avenue, (Behind only Women’s Fitness). This will remain the downtown transfer site for approximately one year.
