Transit terminal moves into Sorensen Station

July 29, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Beginning August 1, 2010, Transit will be back in its original location, now known as Sorensen Station. Public washrooms will once again be available for the convenience of passengers. The improved facility will house a customer service center that is slated to open September 1, where riders can buy passes and tickets or ask questions, and inquire about lost and found. Transit is currently operating from their temporary site on Alexander Way until Sunday.

“Customers can definitely expect a seamless transition, no significant changes to route schedules are expected during the move back to Sorensen Station,” said Steve Parkin, Transit Facilities Superintendent. “It’s also an added benefit that the work that was done to house the temporary transit terminal will continue to be an advantage to the local community and to the long-term future use of Alexander Way as pedestrian corridor.”

Moving the terminal allowed The City to complete construction on Sorensen Station, the three storey parkade with over 400 additional parking stall in the downtown area and allow for expanded Transit office space and kiosk retail opportunities in the northwest corner. The project continues to contribute to the overall downtown revitalization. The temporary terminal area will be returning to its original format of public parking.

Gordon Lloyd Sorensen, who passed away in November 1981, was a prominent citizen and a well-respected individual in Red Deer. In 1957, Mr. Sorensen began a bus service in the city of Red Deer. He started with one bus and eventually expanded to 14 buses when he sold his business to The City in 1966.
