Black History Month

Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Black Canadians to our economic, cultural, social, and political progress. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge and recognize the injustices and inequalities that exist in our communities and call attention to the need for social, political, and cultural change towards a more equitable society.

Black history is an important part of our heritage in Alberta. During Black History Month, all Albertans are encouraged to learn more about how Black Canadians continue to shape Canada’s history and to participate in local community events.

Alberta: Growing up Black

This mini documentary, produced out of the need to create relevant educational material that includes the historical presence of the black community in the development of Alberta since its beginnings in 1905, aims to stimulate dialogue addressing the roots and present-day existence of anti-black racism here in Alberta.

I Can't Breathe

Congratulations to Red Deer filmmaker Love Nwigwe, whose film was selected by STORYHIVE for this program.
