Employee Benefit Overview

The City of Red Deer offers a cost-shared, competitive and comprehensive benefit plan, which complements our overall compensation plan. Dependent upon union affiliation, and the terms and conditions of employment, the following benefits may be offered.

Extended Health and Dental Care

The City provides extended health, dental, and emergency medical travel insurance through Alberta Blue Cross.

Health Spending Account

$750 available per year for medical expenses not covered under any other extended health and dental plan. The plan is non-taxable and if the full amount of the benefit is not used annually the remaining balance of credits will not be brought forward to accumulate.

Lifestyle Spending Account

$750 available per year will be credited into a taxable flexible spending account designed to reimburse the employee for expenses incurred to enhance personal development, fitness and wellness, retirement savings and day to day lifestyle. If the full amount of the benefit is not used annually the remaining credits will not be brought forward to accumulate.

Pension Plan

The City matches the employee's contribution to the Local Authorities Pension Plan, plus contributes an additional one percent.

Registered Retirement Savings Plan

Contributions may be made to a Registered Retirement Saving Plan through payroll deduction. This is employee paid and is an optional benefit.

Basic Group Life Insurance

Coverage is two times annual salary. The premium on the first $25,000 worth of coverage is paid by The City.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

If an insured employee dies as a result of an accident while insured, the AD&D plan will pay an amount equal to the Basic Group Life Insurance benefit. If an insured employee sustains a loss of limb or eligible injury while insured, the AD&D benefit will be paid according to the schedule outlined by the plan.

Optional Life Insurance

Up to an additional $300,000 may be purchased in increments of $10,000 paid by the employee at a group rate.

Spousal Optional Life Insurance

Up to $300,000 may be purchased in increments of $10,000 paid by the employee at a group rate for their spouse.

Dependent Life Insurance

Coverage for spouse of $15,000 and $10,000 for each eligible dependent child paid by the employee at a group rate.

Sick Leave Benefits

Employees accumulate short-term sick coverage at rates varying from ¾ to one day per month. Long term sick coverage is provided, upon approval, up to a maximum of three years at varying percentages paid for each of the three years.
