Red Deer, Alberta – A 29 year old Red Deer man who fled police in a stolen truck in the early hours of February 3 faces numerous charges after police located him again shortly afterward and arrested him; the suspect was also wanted for more than 70 outstanding charges out of Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House and other police jurisdictions.
Shortly before midnight on February 2, Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of a truck driving dangerously in the area of Gaetz Avenue and 67 Street. Police determined that the truck was stolen and located it at 68 Street and Taylor Drive; it fled into the Normandeau neighbourhood at a high rate of speed and RCMP did not pursue it due to public safety concerns. Police located the stolen truck again a short time later in a residential parking lot on Norquay Street and waited until the driver had exited the truck before taking him into custody.
The truck, a blue GMC Sierra, had been stolen on February 2 from a South Hill residence.
29 year old Nelson Ryan Gomes of Red Deer faces the following charges regarding the events of February 3:
- Criminal Code 355(a) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Criminal Code 129(a) – Resisting/ obstructing police officer X 2
- Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with recognizance X 2
Gomes will appear in Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer on February 8 at 9:30 am to face approximately 79 charges in total, including those from the events of February 3.
