Update on local access

July 3, 2015 10:50 AM

55 Street from 48 Avenue to 42 Avenue is now closed and will remain closed until September for the 55 Street Improvement Project. During this time, access for local residents will be maintained as follows:

  • 55 Street and 45 Avenue intersection in July
  • 55 Street and 42A intersection in August

The Michener Hill will also be closed for the month of July.

The traffic signals at 55 Street and 45 Avenue and 55 Street and 48 Avenue have been adjusted as follows:

  • Flashing red for vehicles travelling north and south; drivers should treat this as a stop and yield to pedestrians.
  • Flashing amber for pedestrians going east and west; pedestrians should check for vehicles before proceeding.

We understand that this project is an inconvenience for residents; however, the work is necessary in order to support growth and development in the city. The underground utilities under 55 Street are over 60 years old and are at capacity. Given the scale of the project and the work that needs to be completed, a full road closure is the only option. Due to the proximity of schools in the area, this work needs to take place during the summer months when school is out.
