With construction season coming to an end, we wanted to provide you with a final update on the 67 Street/Johnstone Drive Corridor Improvements Drive project. The roundabout is open and fully operational, and the vast majority of work is complete. With the early blast of winter we received, we weren’t able to do a final site clean-up or finish as much of the landscaping as we had hoped. You’ll see some activity next year as we put the final touches on the landscaping, but there be minimal traffic impacts (intermittent lane closures in the roundabout while crews work on landscaping in the centre island).
When this intersection was identified for upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety, a modern roundabout was selected because they accommodate higher traffic volumes, are safer and improve traffic flow compared to traditional signalized intersections. However, we also know modern roundabouts are new for many drivers – notably they’re different than older style traffic circles – and it will take some time for drivers to learn the rules of the road for modern roundabouts.
When the roundabout at 67 Street/30 Avenue opened, we developed and launched an extensive public education campaign, including videos available at www.roundabout.how. We’ve also developed materials specific to the 67 Street/Johnstone Drive roundabout to help drivers:
- Driving the 67 Street and Johnstone Drive/Orr Drive roundabout
- Large vehicles and modern roundabouts (pdf)
Again, we thank you for your patience and understanding as we’ve worked to upgrade this critical infrastructure. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Engineering Department at 403-342-8158.
