The City’s Environmental Initiatives team is ready to help residents dig in and make compost for their yards and gardens with the annual Composting at Home program.

Just in time for the gardening season, The City of Red Deer will enroll 200 households to compost in their own backyards. Participants will be provided with a free compost bin, aerating tool and kitchen catcher, plus training and ongoing support on how to compost.

“In the past six years of the program residents have demonstrated their interest in backyard composting, and we want to continue to offer them the tools to try it,” said Lauren Maris, Environmental Program Specialist. “We have eliminated the barriers to backyard composting by offering the tools and providing the expertise. We teach participants how to compost properly, so smells or pests aren’t a problem.”

Backyard composting can work hand in hand with the new Green Cart program. Not all organic waste can be put in a backyard composter, but what can’t be composted at home can go in the Green Cart. The compost created at home is great for use on gardens, trees, and even lawns.

Residents who want to participate can go to starting March 1 to register, or they can sign up earlier to be notified when registration opens. Already more than 60 people have signed up to receive the email reminder.

More than 1,200 households have taken part in the program since its launch in 2012, diverting more than 125,000 kilograms of organic material from the landfill.

“The Composting at Home program helps us achieve our goal to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill, and not only teaches residents the importance of diverting, but gives them a real understanding of how everyday waste can be turned into something valuable,” said Maris.
