Optimism fuels building permit increase

Permit values were up significantly in July due to two multi-million dollar projects and a boost to commercial and residential construction.

In the public sector, The City issued building permits for RDC’s Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness & Sport, at an estimated value of $75.7 million and for a renovation to the MRI procedure room at a value of $764,000. A permit for $7.1 million for a Co-Op Food Store in Timberlands also pushed commercial permits far above last July’s values, as well as year-to-date values.

Stronger residential building permits in July, combined with increased commercial building permits, indicate that Red Deer’s economy may be starting to pick up again.

“We are noticing an increase in the number of permit applications coming through the door,” said Angie Keibel, Development & Licensing Supervisor. “More optimism among applicants tends to translate into more project starts.”

Monthly permit statistics are available on The City’s website at: Red Deer Open Data Catalogue
