Public sector construction led the way in building permit values for 2015, pushing the year’s $232 million total for all sectors past 2014’s $214 million total.

Public sector permits issued in 2015 were valued at $91 million, compared to $1 million in 2014. Industrial construction was also strong at $35 million for the year, but permits were still short of 2014’s values, as was the case in residential and commercial sectors. While values were down year-to-date, the number of permits issued in public, commercial and industrial sectors in 2015 exceeded 2014.

“Like other Alberta cities, Red Deer has seen a slower year for residential construction, but overall other sectors were solid and our building permit values in 2015 surpassed 2014,” said Angie Keibel, Development & Licensing Supervisor. “Our public sector building has been very strong with a big part of that being a permit for the construction of the AHS parkade, valued at $27 million.”

In December of 2015, there were three significant building permits. The first was the redevelopment of four residential suites in the Riverlands area. Also in Riverlands, a building permit was issued for a massage clinic. In the Golden West Area, a permit was issued for a liquor store.

Monthly permit statistics are available on The City’s website at: Red Deer Open Data Catalogue
