At today’s regular Council meeting, City Council approved, in principle, the plan to repurpose Central Elementary School and develop the Canada Games Celebration Plaza to the west of the school.
This plan is the result of a partnership between The City of Red Deer, the 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society and Red Deer Public School District. City Council has agreed to purchase Central Elementary School and lands immediately west of the school from Red Deer Public School District for $1 to have this vision achieved.
“This partnership allows us to preserve a heritage building in Red Deer’s downtown and create a vibrant community centre that is integral to our historical, cultural and community identity,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “Sport building is community building and this is another example of a community legacy resulting from hosting the 2019 Games.”
“This is an innovative and sustainable solution that will meet our operational needs and provide our community with a central, downtown place to gather and celebrate excellence during the 2019 Games,” said Lyn Radford, Board Chair of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. “The Canada Games movement creates unity through sport, which not only results in infrastructure and sport legacies but also creates cultural legacies. Long-term, this partnership will leave a lasting legacy in Red Deer’s downtown for the community to enjoy.”
“Our schools really do belong to the community. This is another example of the strong and valued partnership we have with The City of Red Deer. We have shared space with The City with the library at Barrie Wilson Elementary. Currently we are integrating community space with The City at our newest school, Don Campbell Elementary in Inglewood as well as the rebuild of West Park Middle School,” said Bev Manning, Board Chair with Red Deer Pubic Schools. “We share a common vision with The City of Red Deer and the Canada Winter Games. Now we get to return the favour by turning over our valued and loved Central Elementary School which will become an exciting and vibrant part of downtown Red Deer providing a long lasting legacy to celebrate sports, arts and culture in Red Deer.”
City Council will consider approving $7.5 million to upgrade Central Elementary School during the 2017 Capital Budget deliberations set for Tuesday, November 22 and Wednesday, November 23, 2016.
It is intended that the Central Elementary School building will be used as the 2019 Canada Winter Games headquarters leading up to and during the Games. Following the Games, the building will be used for broader community use for lasting community benefit, including relocating Culture Services to the downtown with future operational partners. The Canada Games Celebration Plaza will be home to festival programming during the 2019 Games and will provide a long-term celebration space in the heart of the city.
