(Red Deer, Alberta)

Construction work has started in Great Chief Park to upgrade the park, which will be a host venue for long-track speed skating during the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Over the next year crews are working on:

  • Constructing a new synthetic sports field and a world class 400 metre speed skating oval.
  • Constructing a new field house/pavilion which will include a concession, public washrooms, change rooms, meeting space, timekeeper and a media area.
  • Constructing a new maintenance building.
  • Upgrading electrical services.
  • Reconfiguring the parking area.

“This project is one of the many venues in Red Deer that will be used for the 2019 Canada Winter Games, and these enhancements will also provide the community with a four season park for decades to come,” said Curtis Martinek, Project Superintendent.

This work is happening now while weather allows crews to do earth work on the new sports field before winter shutdown. Trees and brush are currently being removed at the west and north parking lots to improve sight lines for safety and access. On Wednesday, November 16 underground utility construction will begin for approximately one week, and there will be intermittent lane closures on the road into Great Chief Park.
