School and playground zone times set to change August 1

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Red Deer school and playground zones will follow new times starting August 1, 2017.

The City is changing the effective times of school and playground zones to make them easier to remember. The following changes will come into effect August 1:

  • School zones will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days
  • Playground zones will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day
  • Combinations zones (marked as both school and playground zones) will be converted to playground zones.

To make the changes easier for drivers, all signs will be equipped with a time tab noting the effective times of that zone. The speed limit in school and playground zones will continue to be 30 km/h during effective hours.

“The new times are really simple and cover peak play hours for schools and playgrounds,” said Wayne Gustafson, Engineering Services Manager. “This will make it easier for drivers and safer for pedestrians.”

The City currently follows the school and playground zone times set by the Alberta Traffic Safety Act. As allowed by the Traffic Safety Act, the City is moving to new times that better fit the needs of the community.

“There is a lot of confusion around the end time of playground zones and the definition of sunset in provincial standards,” said Gustafson. “We’ve eliminated that confusion, so drivers should have an easier time remembering the new times.”
