Public Hearing to be held for site extension of temporary shelter

October 30, 2023 4:12 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

Following first reading of a Land Use Bylaw amendment by Council today, a Public Hearing is scheduled to gather feedback on the application, which if approved, would enable the temporary shelter to continue operating in its current location at Cannery Row (5239 53 Avenue).

Consideration of the amendment comes after Safe Harbour Society, the organization who operates the shelter, applied to The City to extend the zoning. Currently, the temporary shelter is permitted to operate until February 1, 2024. If approved, the Land Use Bylaw amendment would allow shelter use within the Direct Control 28 District (current location at Cannery Row (5239 53 Avenue) (pdf)) as a discretionary use, subject to a subsequent approval for a Development Permit.

The Public Hearing will take place on December 4 starting at 5 p.m. Property owners and adjacent landowners within Direct Control 28 District will be contacted to invite feedback on the application. Citizens are also invited to participate in advance or during the Public Hearing. Information about participating in the Public Hearing will be posted to reddeer.ca/publichearing and engage.reddeer.ca in the coming days. All feedback received prior to the deadline will be included in Council’s report for consideration.

This is not the first Public Hearing held relating to the zoning of the temporary emergency shelter at Cannery Row. However, we ask citizens to provide comments in this Public Hearing whether they submitted in the past or not. The City wants to ensure all feedback is current and relevant to the current amendment.

Following the closure of the Public Hearing, Council will consider second and third reading of the bylaw.
