Red Deer RCMP arrest driver of stolen car after residential foot chase

Red Deer, Alberta – Red Deer RCMP have arrested a man after locating him in a stolen car this afternoon and then pursuing him as he fled on foot, at times jumping from roof to roof in the Grandview neighbourhood.

RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on a side street off 40A Avenue at 2:30 pm today; when they located the car, the lone male occupant fled police on foot. In his efforts to evade police, the suspect ran through residential yards then took to the roofs, jumping from rooftop to rooftop in the area between approximately 32 Street and 39 Street. Police officers gave chase on foot while more officers contained the area. The suspect surrendered to police and came down from the roof when it was apparent he had been surrounded. The car, a blue Mazda, had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on May 29.

The entire incident was resolved within approximately 30 minutes; while the suspect ran through a number of yards and onto the roofs of several homes in his attempts to evade police, the officers who pursued him had their eyes on the suspect almost continuously. The public was not in danger during this event.

A 23 year old Blackfalds man will face charges as a result of this incident. His name cannot be released at this time as the charges have not been sworn before the courts. RCMP continue to investigate and will issue an update with more details and the charges once those charges have been sworn.
