Red Deer RCMP respond to unfolding incident – Update #3 – New arrest

February 23, 2017 1:53 PM

Red Deer, Alberta – Thanks to a team effort by Alberta Sheriffs, Sylvan Lake RCMP and Blackfalds RCMP, the fourth suspect in a Red Deer incident on February 21 is now in custody; RCMP had been searching for the suspect since he fled Red Deer members after a three-vehicle collision in a stolen SUV while his three companions were arrested.

Red Deer RCMP identified the fourth suspect early in their investigation and obtained warrants for his arrest pertaining to the February 21 collision and a gas and dash that occurred in Red Deer earlier the same day, involving the same stolen vehicle.

At 10:30 pm on February 22, a member of the Alberta Sheriffs located a suspicious vehicle in the area of Highway 11 and Range Road 285, and quickly determined the driver was the same suspect who was wanted on warrants out of Red Deer. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended with assistance from a second Sheriff. Sylvan Lake RCMP arrived at the scene and took custody of the suspect until Blackfalds RCMP arrived to take carriage of the investigation.

“This arrest is a great example the importance of working closely with Alberta Sheriffs and our Priority Crimes Task Force partners,” said Staff Sergeant Ken Morrison of the Blackfalds RCMP. “Criminals cross jurisdictions all the time, and the best way to ensure quick responses and successful arrests is through constant communication, shared intelligence and support for each other’s policing efforts.”

33 year old James Ronald Holt faces the following charges:

  • Criminal Code 145(5) – Fail to appear in court
  • Criminal Code 355(a) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000 X 2
  • Criminal Code 334(b) – Theft under $5,000
  • Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with undertaking X 5

Holt has been remanded and will appear in court in Red Deer on March 9 at 9:30 am

Red Deer RCMP respond to unfolding incident in south Red Deer – Update #1 – Arrests made

Red Deer, Alberta – Red Deer RCMP have three suspects in custody and continue to search for a fourth after the group fled from a stolen white Nissan SUV following a three-car collision in downtown Red Deer shortly after 1 pm today. RCMP continue to ask for the public’s cooperation in avoiding the green space around Pioneer Lodge in the Parkvale neighbourhood, as they continue their search for the fourth suspect, a man wearing a blue hoodie.

The stolen SUV was involved in a gas and dash shortly before noon today, and had fled police earlier this morning; RCMP located it again in the area of 43 Street and 49 Avenue after it collided with two other vehicles and was abandoned by its occupants.

RCMP arrested three suspects within blocks of the collision scene – two men and a woman – after they each fled in different directions.

Traffic in the area of Gaetz Avenue and 37 Street was impacted for less than an hour, as was traffic at the collision scene. The public was further impacted as police officers stationed at various trail heads stopped citizens from entering the park system in the areas being searched.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the downtown collision. The Nissan truck had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on February 16.

RCMP thank the public for their patience during traffic disruptions, and for their continued cooperation as police search for the final suspect. Citizens are advised not to engage with any suspicious person or activity but to call RCMP immediately at 403-343-5575 with any information.

RCMP will issue an update as more details become available and charges have been sworn before the courts.
