Year of the Garden Activities and Events

We are working with our community partners to provide a list of all things "Year of the Garden". 

There are many ways to celebrate the Year of the Garden, including different activities, events and tutorials. Browse through each upcoming month to see what is being offered.  The activities and events monthly lists will be updated regularly so check back often for updates.

What's happening?

July
  • All summer - Garden Works: Bud to Bloom is a group visual and literary arts exhibition all summer long in Red Deer Arts Council's brand new gallery.
  • Year round - Parkland Garden Centre hosts a variety of workshops and courses throughout the year.
  • Year round - Nature Central hosts events and has lists of parkland areas to visit and appreciate.
  • July 6 - Wetland ecology walk: Learn about wetland ecology and human pollution in a protected environment with a walk and talk in the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. Pre-registration required.
  • July 8 - Garden Works: Bud to Bloom opening reception at Red Deer Arts Council's new gallery.
  • July 9 - Parasite Walk at River Bend Recreation Area hosted by Nature Central and Red Deer River Naturalists. Learn all about parasitic relationships in nature. 
  • July 13 - Family Nature Nights: Incredible Ecosystems. Learn about local nature and meet a live great horned owl!
  • July 16 - Fantastic Feasts & Where to Find Them: Explore culinary improvisation as you first search the Fort Normandeau garden for delectable nibbles, then create a snack with what you've found. Pre-register by July 14.
  • July 28-August 1 - Backyard BioBlitz: document species so that conservationists may one day use this information to target conservation locations for species at risk or to combat the spread of invasive ones. 
  • July 30 - Bannock Making: Nothing beats the smell (and taste) of warm bannock straight off the fire! Learn how to make this comforting staple. Pre-register by July 29. 
  • Learn more about Pollinator Parks and see them in action in Red Deer
  • Sample from the numerous Community Food Forests and Orchards in Red Deer.

  • Learn about mulching and insulating.

  • Consider indoor growing to keep the Year of the Garden growing all year round!
