Red Deer RCMP investigate online threat

Red Deer, Alta – On Oct. 4, 2021, at approximately 10 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received numerous reports of a threat made against Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School over a social media app.

The Red Deer RCMP investigated and after speaking with witness, quickly located the individual who had posted the concerning comment. After speaking with the individual, the threat was determined to not be credible. The attending member educated the youth and their family about the seriousness of the situation and the repercussions of making threats online.

“We want to reiterate how dangerous these types of threats are, even if they’re meant as a joke,” said Cpl. Mike Evans, Red Deer RCMP Community Policing. “We take them very seriously and investigate thoroughly as they can have a very negative impact to our community’s feeling of safety and mental wellbeing.”

This incident is considered resolved and no charges will be laid against the individual.

"Threats like these are taken seriously and have a significant impact on students, staff and families. We have shared this information with the Lindsay Thurber community. As part of our message, we have provided details on supports that are available for those needing it. We also appreciate the wise decisions those seeing the threat made in order to address it quickly and help resolve the situation,” said Bruce Buruma, Director of Community Relations.

The Red Deer RCMP would like to thank the students for taking the matter seriously and reporting the incident.
