Red Deer Lights the Night

A modified version of Red Deer Lights the Night is set to take place in our community this Christmas season, presented by Stantec and hosted by The City of Red Deer and the Downtown Business Association.

Though we cannot gather together in City Hall Park as in previous years, the tradition of lighting up the night as a community will continue. Red Deerians are invited to help us light the night by turning on their home and business Christmas lights in unison at 5 p.m. Saturday, November 21. We’d love to see photos of your decorations; please share your pics online and be sure to tag The City of Red Deer and include #rdlights.

A video showcasing the lights and decorations in City Hall Park will be shared online (YouTube, this web page, and The City’s social media channels) so Red Deerians can enjoy the view safely and from the comfort of their own homes.

Stantec Santa Bus
December 5 and 12

The festivities would not be complete without an appearance from Santa. Because young Red Deerians cannot visit him in person at City Hall Park this year, he will be touring local neighbourhoods on the Stantec Santa Bus. On December 5 and 12, children of all ages are invited to watch from the window to see Santa wave as the bus drives by. Stay tuned for a complete schedule of the Stantec Santa Bus.

Please note: Residents are reminded to follow physical distancing guidelines and asked to remain in front of their own homes, if possible, while watching for the Stantec Santa Bus.

Hockey Canada Decorating Contest
Submission Deadline: November 30

While we are disappointed the World Juniors tournament is postponed, we are looking forward to welcoming the tournament in Red Deer in 2021/22 and we know Red Deerians will be cheering on Team Canada from home this year.

We have a fun and exciting way to show your support for Team Canada, with a chance to win some great World Juniors prize packages. So get creative and decorate the outside of your home or business in celebration of Team Canada. Dig out those Canada Day decorations, use hockey or skating equipment or anything else red and white. Think about the items you already have at home and have some fun with it!

And don’t worry if you don’t have a yard, there is a category for small spaces, including balconies, porches, window and indoor displays.

Share your photos online using #rdlights and #GoCanadaGo. You also have a chance to score some great prizes from Hockey Canada, including jerseys, Team Canada swag and even game tickets to the 2021 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. To enter, email your photos to communications@reddeer.ca. Be sure to include your name and contact information (phone number or email address) so we can reach you if you win a prize.

We will narrow it down to the best 10 photos in each category, and ask the community to choose the winner!

Categories include:

  1. Small space (outdoor balconies, porches and patios, window or indoor displays)
  2. Large space (yards and buildings)
