International Day of Older Persons celebrated in City recreation centres

September 25, 2020 11:48 AM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

Seniors, 65 years and older are invited to reserve free activities at the Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre or Recreation Centre on Thursday, October 1.

The City of Red Deer typically works in collaboration with community agencies to host the annual Senior’s Fair on October 1 of each year. Due to many factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was cancelled for 2020. In its place, The City welcomes Red Deerians 65 years and older to experience a day full of free activities and fun in our recreation centres.

“We are happy to have our older adults join us for free activities on October 1,” said Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent. “By highlighting programs and activities available to seniors, we hope to encourage older Red Deerians to stay healthy, active and connected.”

Activities range from aquatic fitness to public skating, pickleball, basketball, fitness classes and more! All activities are free for customers 65 years and older. Activities designed specifically for older adults on October 1 are available for online reservation through Look ‘n Book. However, all activities at our recreation centres are free to these patrons on Thursday. We encourage customers to view the activity options available for online reservation at www.reddeer.ca/seniors or view all available activities at www.reddeer.ca/reserve and call in to secure their space.

The City welcomes older adults to our recreation centres in a time where health and safety is paramount. We have worked to adapt all programming, including these free opportunities for older adults, to align with Alberta Health Services’ recommendations for Recreation, Physical Activity and Sport. These measures include enhanced cleaning, physical distancing and more, to ensure Red Deerians can participate in healthy, safe activities. For more information on the variety of safety measures taking place in City of Red Deer recreation centres visit www.reddeer.ca/more-confident.

October 1 is recognized by the United Nations as the International Day of Older Persons.
