City Council gives first reading to fireworks bylaw

August 19, 2019 7:00 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

At today’s regular City Council meeting, Council gave first reading to Fireworks Bylaw 3626/2019.

The Fireworks Bylaw will regulate the use of fireworks including display fireworks (used by professionals for events such as Canada Day), pyrotechnics (used for stage shows and movie effects), and consumer fireworks. A fireworks permit will be required to discharge display, pyrotechnic and consumer fireworks to ensure public safety.

Earlier this year, the Province of Alberta chose to be regulated by the National Fire Code as opposed to its own provincial code, which had been in place since 1984. This change leaves municipalities to determine the regulations for fireworks sale and use within their own boundaries. Fireworks Bylaw 3626/2019 will replicate the practices that were in place in Red Deer for the past 35 years.
