Update: Code of Conduct C-01-2021

August 24, 2021 9:33 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

During today’s Council meeting, Councillor Buchanan issued a public apology to Red Deer residents, businesses, staff and Council, fulfilling a key sanction imposed by City Council following a Code of Conduct Bylaw investigation earlier this year. Buchanan also advised that he met in-person on July 19, 2021 with Catherine Bulek-Lachman, Public Health Officer / Executive Officer, AHS Environmental Public Health to offer a personal apology for his actions on social media on January 27, 2021.

Councillor Buchanan had been suspended from all Council committees and all Deputy Mayor rotation duties until sincere apologies were provided. Council unanimously passed a motion stating they were satisfied with the apologies, fulfilling the requirements of the third sanction allowing Councillor Buchanan to resume his duties on Council Committees and return to the Deputy Mayor rotation.

The last remaining sanction is for Councillor Buchanan to complete a social media course selected and paid for by The City of Red Deer that aligns with typical media training for City staff. As of today, Councillor Buchanan has not fulfilled this sanction.
