Some outdoor skating surfaces to open this weekend, others waiting for more snow

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Skating surfaces at Bower Ponds and Westlake are ready for public use December 11, 2021; however, outdoor rinks and Anders’ skating surface will need a little more time.

Parks and Recreation staff have been busy getting outdoor rinks ready for the winter season. Warm weather and a lack of snow caused a delay for us this year for our outdoor rinks. Crews are hoping the weather cooperates so we can open these amenities soon. When these are ready to open, the lights will be turned on, the nets will be put in place, and the community will be notified.

The City would like to remind skaters that the use of helmets is recommended at all times, and hockey is not permitted at Bower Ponds or the ice skating oval at Setters Place at Great Chief Park.

At Bower Ponds, outdoor washrooms are available to the public daily from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm and are found on the south side of the Bower Ponds Pavilion. The Pavilion will be officially launching the winter Season starting Saturday, December 18, offering; skate rentals, concession, indoor skate changing and warming.

Setters Place at Great Chief Park will open Friday, December 17, 2021, please check the City’s website at www.reddeer.ca for available skating times. Indoor heated change rooms and washrooms are available at this location. Admission fees are required to access the ice oval at Setters Place.
