Changes to Land Use Bylaw and new development permit being considered to continue operating temporary shelter

February 25, 2021 3:12 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

At Monday’s meeting, Council will consider an amendment to the Land Use Bylaw and a site exception to consider continuation of the temporary shelter in Cannery Row. The temporary shelter was established in 2020 to ensure safety of shelter users during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a safe place that meets provincial requirements of physical distancing and health measures.

The site was acquired outside of the development permitting process during a declared State of Local Emergency by means of an Emergency Order. A one year lease was established and will expire at the end of March 2021.

On Monday, Council will consider first reading of the Land Use Bylaw 3357/H-2021 for a short term temporary care facility site exception at 5239 53 Avenue. If passed, there will be a public hearing at their March 29 meeting, followed by second and third reading. Letters are in the mail to landowners within 100 meters of the site in order to provide an opportunity to review the proposed changes and provide comments.
