City Council considers extension to municipal face covering bylaw

(Red Deer, Alberta)

An extension of The City’s municipal face covering bylaw was considered by City Council tonight with third reading scheduled to come back for consideration before March 1, 2021, at a future City Council meeting.

The proposed extension would be in place until June 1, 2021, mandating face coverings continue to be worn in indoor public spaces and when riding City transit vehicles.

If approved, the municipal bylaw will continue to be secondary to the provincial face covering bylaw, which is currently in place; however, the proposed extension is aimed at ensuring consistency and alignment with the overall provincial mask bylaw.

At this time, The City of Red Deer continues to focus on education and voluntary compliance with the bylaw. Fines are issued as needed; however, those responsible for enforcement are seeking to educate and encourage compliance, only issuing public health order violations when education fails.

Under the bylaw, face coverings means a medical or non-medical mask, or other face covering to create a barrier that limits the transmission of respiratory droplets.

The fine for non-compliance is $50; however, The City’s preference is to educate prior to issuing tickets and fines.
